always back to the basic. You really have to look at two different periods according to what you are checking eg market running up or running down too fast. The above should help in detecting tops and bottoms of te Market Greed and panic are two of the main factors moving the Market too high or too low.

honestly is it worth going all this fuss?I read that Warren Buffett abandoned chart analysis after years of trying to get something out of it.After all if everything was said in the charts all you would need would be just a computer to become a millionaire.

Editor's response: Thanks for the feedback, and your comments are plenty valid. Here are a few follow-up thoughts.

Not everything is in a chart. Most things are in charts, and sometimes there's enough there to go on without fundamentals. If we ever sounded as if the fundies or the economy don't matter though, we apologize.... it ALL ultimately matters eventually. But yes, it is worth the fuss, if it gives us an edge on the rest of the market's participants. A small 'edge' can lead to big results.

In that same light, no, a computer running a chart-based system will not make anyone a millionaire (probably not, anyway). By the same token, a computer running a 100% fundamental/economic-based system won't make anyone a millionaire either.

What the anti-chart establishment is quick to point out - and correctly so - is that most technical traders underperform the market. What they fail to acknowledge, however, is that most fundamental investors also underperform the market. Neither school of thought has really 'proven' itself as a can't-miss. It's just that fundamental analysis has a tremendous head start in the average investor's mindset.

I also recall that Warren Buffett tinkered with charts and decided against it. Fair enough. He's not alone either.... lots of smart people have tried and dumped chart analysis, having not been able to use it with any meaningful success. I'll just pose this possibility....

When someone says "technical analysis doesn't work for anybody", are they really just saying "I can't make technical analysis work for me."? I'm willing to bet the latter is the more common reality. It's easier to say the idea is flawed rather than admit the user is flawed, even when it's Warren Buffett. And just for the record, I have developed several index-trading systems with consistent market-beating results - so it is possible. Acheiving millionaire status, however, requires some major capital. I'm getting there, but it's not a lottery ticket.

It's a great debate - technical or fundamental. We've found (as we've said repeatedly) that the combonation of both - when done properly - is the key to successful investing in the 21st century. That's why we talk about both aspects so often.

Hope that helps, but if you've got something to add or ask, please feel free to chime in below.

I am in economic development and good lord was Brazil interesting. They have been number one on the TSX for the past five years but I dont know how they will get over some of the social structure problems. I dont even know if they will even be able to pull off the next summer games. Too many hands in too many pockets..
I am Canadian, proud westerner.. I had a Brazilian room mate in France who I went to visit.
I have never been to the Caribbean. But I already have a trip to Panama planned for next year..
Thanks for the website.
Cheers.

I suspect "withheld" and Merri have stumbled on a huge winner as long as our Government and/or private venture capital are willing to provide Bluefire with enough capital to allow them to build plants all around the country near landfills. Looks like a win-win-win deal to me for the environment, energy independence and business profits. In addition to their claim of being able to make ethanol for about a buck a gallon, I read somewhere that cellulosic processes can get a dollar a gallon tax rebate as well!
BFRE stock is up from when it was first mentioned, and I am just waiting for a pull-back to make a long-term purchase.
